Descent of the Travers River

The canoe & portage expedition

The canoe and portage expedition

The Travers River tour is what you need to travel back in time and experience the same adventure as the Americans and their guides back in the days of the Triton Fish and Game Club. This trip will remain engraved in the memory of all adventurers who dare to try it! Planned activities: trail portages, canoeing through lakes and rivers, and accommodation in a rustic log camp. There’s nothing like it! This package is for people looking for a good challenge. You don’t need to be an expert, nor even have great knowledge on how to handle or row a canoe. However, it is recommended that you be in good physical shape. This tour is also available to children with good physical endurance, who are good walkers. A guide will be present during the expedition and will help you out with the portage of the canoe. Everyone will have to get involved and help carry canoes, food and luggage.

The schedule

Day 1: Arrival at the Seigneurie du Triton, beaver observation, dinner and bedtime.

Day 2: Breakfast at the dining room, meeting with your private guide, packing of your backpack for the expedition. (Bring only the bare minimum: swimsuit, towel and basic toiletries, underwear and comfortable clothes, polar fleece, raincoat, walking boots, insect repellant and sunscreen. All of this plus a share of the food must fit into a small backpack). Learn to control the canoe on Lac-à-la-Croix. Lunch at the Shore Lunch, 4 lake crossings lasting about 20 minutes and 4 portages lasting between 10 and 25 minutes. Set up at the trapper’s camp, dinner, observation of the stars around the campfire and other fun campfire activities.

Day 3: Breakfast and canoe trip across Trois Caribous Lake and Travers Lake. Descent of the Travers River and 10 portages lasting between 5 and 30 minutes. Crossing of Biscuits Lake, portage of 5 minutes, small descent on the Batiscan River and arrival at La Seigneurie. Get to your room for a well-deserved rest! Dinner and evening activity at La Seigneurie.

Day 4: Breakfast at the dining room, trapper’s trail and lunch at the Shore Lunch. Departure in the afternoon.

* Since the tour takes you into wet areas, the presence of flies and mosquitoes can be quite significant, especially in June and at the beginning of July (depending on hatching). You must therefore bring lightweight, long and light-coloured clothing as well as insect repellant bought in Quebec, and a mosquito net if you want to protect yourself.

The canoe and portage expedition includes:

  • Lodge accommodation with bedding for 2 nights;
  • Accommodation in the Trapper’s rustic camp with sleeping bags for 1 night;
  • 3 breakfasts;
  • 2 lunches at the Shore Lunch;
  • 1 lunch-box meal;
  • 3 dinners, including 2 in the dining room;
  • Canoes;
  • Private guide for the 2 days of canoeing and portage;
  • Access to the Seigneurie du Triton’s outdoor equipment and activities.
